Edna Eileen Ficken

Edna Eileen Ficken of McCook passed away Sunday, September 17, 2017 at Community Hospital surrounded by her family. She was 100 years old. Edna was born on September 28, 1916, in Frontier County, Nebraska to parents John and Wilhemine "Minnie" (Wolf) Buell. She was baptized at Maple Grove Methodist Church south of Eustis and confirmed on May 17, 1931 at Salem Lutheran Church, rural Elwood. She graduated from Eustis High School in 1934 and taught school for three years in rural schools. On May 4, 1938, she married Herman Ficken at rural Salem Lutheran Church, Elwood, NE. To this union three daughters were born, Janet, Joan and Carole. They made their home on a farm in the Eustis community. She was a long time member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Elwood where she was active in Bible Study and Womens Group. She later became a member of Peace Lutheran Church after moving to McCook. Besides being a busy homemaker and mother Edna helped with the farm work when needed. She organized and taught Sunday School for several years. In her spare time she made quilts for all of her grandchildren to treasure. In 1983, Edna and Herman retired to Elwood until 2004 when Hermans illness forced them to move to Willow Ridge Apartments, now Brookdale, in McCook. While living there she enjoyed the companionship of fellow residents and looked forward to walks with new found friends. Visits from grandchildren and great-grandchildren were always a treat for her. Preceding her in death were her parents, John and Minnie Buell; her husband Herman Ficken in 2007; and siblings, Dorene Buell and Kenneth Buell. Survivors include her three daughters, Janet and husband, Robert Hein, of McCook, Joan and husband, Larry Burke, of Elwood and Carole and husband, Robert Dreher, of Kearney; brother, Victor Buell of Elwood; grandchildren, Laura (Tom) Preston, Randall (Dana) Hein, Jeff Burke, Jerrod (Doris) Burke, Sharon (Lath) Livingston, Angela (Michael) Kugler and Jodi (Alec) Shea; great-grandchildren, Katherine, Evan, Lauren, Logan, Kaylee, Kelcie, Leah, Luke, Olivia, and Rowan; great-great-grandson, Kaidyn; numerous nieces, nephews, and many friends including much-loved nursing staff at Brookkdale.
