Earl D. Ommert age 91, of Cambridge died at the Cambridge Manor on Sunday August 5, 2012. He was born on the family farm near Orafino, NE on September 17, 1920 to Carl P. and Leila J. (Nickerson) Ommert. He spent his school days and graduated from Orafino High School in 1938. As a youth he worked on many area farms and spent 6 months working for the Civilian Conservation Corp in the Black Hills of South Dakota. He enlisted in the US Army in June of 1942, taking basic training at Ft. Leonardwood, MO. He then spent 6 months at Lincoln Air Force Base learning the trade of aircraft mechanic. He was then stationed in North Africa as a staff sergeant. He was discharged from the service in November 1945. On February 9, 1947 he was married to Naomi C. Baughman in Cambridge. To this union 3 children were born: Larry, John and Christy. During this time Earl worked for Dorsey Cleaners, the Cambridge Co-Op the City of Cambridge and the Gamble Store. In 1964, Earl became the Postmaster in Cambridge until his retirement in 1985. Earl, in his younger years enjoyed baseball playing for the Cambridge town team. He was a 70 year member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, the National Postmasters Association, and a 55 year member of the American Legion. Earl was a main stay as the sergeant in arms of the Firing Squad. Earl enjoyed golfing, playing cards and visiting with friends at the Cambridge Recreational Club. Earl was preceded in death by his parents, brothers: Elden Pinky and Ronnie. He is survived by his wife Naomi of Cambridge: 2 sons: Larry and wife Carol of Cambridge; John of Asheville, NC; daughter: Christy Hartman of Cambridge: 7 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; half-sister: Opal of Lincoln and half-brother: Don of the Philippines. Funeral services will be held on Thursday August 9, 2012, at 2:00 PM at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Cambridge with Pastor Sherry Skelnar and Bill Weaver officiating. Interment will be in the Fairview Cemetery of Cambridge. Military Committal will be by the Cambridge American Legion Post. Memorials may be left in Earls name to the Butler Memorial Library in Cambridge or Cambridge Senor Center.
