Donald Arthur West, Sr.

Donald Arthur West, Sr. age 90 of McCook, passed away Friday, May 18, 2018 at Great Plains Regional Medical Center in North Platte. Don had recently been transferred from McCook Comm Hospital and passed after battling an infection complicated by pneumonia. Don was born on January 16, 1928 in the Sandhills near White, Nebraska to Arthur D. and Hannah R. (Swedberg) West. He attended Hayes County Rural Schools and farmed with his Dad and brother in his younger years. In the mid to late 50's, Don was employed with NKC Grain at the Army Air Base north of McCook. Through much of the 60's & early 70's, Don worked with Charles Fraser Construction; and then in 1975, he started as a mechanic with Electric Hose and Rubber, now known as Parker Hannifin. He worked there until 1987, at which time he retired due to health issues. Don enjoyed working in his garden each summer, and loved to pass out bags of produce to friends and family. He enjoyed deer hunting with his buddies. He was also a member of the NRA for many years and even had the designation of being a NRA Licensed Reloader. Don also belonged to the local Elks & Eagles Clubs for many years of his life. On August 28, 1955 he was united in marriage to Yvonne Ruppert in McCook. To this union two sons were born, Donald Jr. and Douglas. The couple has lived in the McCook area all of their married life. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Douglas; brothers, Carl (at birth) and Wilbur; sister, Eileen; and father and mother-in-law, Henry and Julia Ruppert. Don is survived by his wife of 62 years, Yvonne West, of McCook; son, Donald West, Jr. and wife, Heather, of Weatherford, TX; granddaughter, Grace West and grandson, Donald West III of Weatherford; and a host of friends and neighbors. Memorials may be given in his name. Visitation will be Wednesday, May 23, 2018 at Herrmann Jones Funeral Chapel in McCook from 10:00 a.m. 7:00 p.m. Friends may go online at www.herrmannfh.com to extend words of comfort to the family. Funeral service will be Thursday, May 24, 2018, 10:00 a.m., at Herrmann Jones Funeral Chapel with Pastor Steve Bales officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery.
