Donald Barger

Donald C. Barger of rural Culbertson passed away Sunday, December 17, 2017 at McCook, Nebraska surrounded by his family. He was 93 years old. Don was born on December 8, 1924 and was raised on the family farm north of Culbertson, homesteaded in 1884, to Bruce Chester and Clara (Seybold) Barger. At age 11, he helped run the family farm after the death of his father. On November 12, 1944 Don married the love of his life, Dorothy Ann Lunbery. Shortly after in January of 1945, at the age of 20, he was drafted into the Army being stationed in the Philippian Islands during World War II, where he served as an army medic. He was honorably discharged as a staff sergeant in 1946. Upon returning home to his wife and the family farm, Don and Dorothy started a family and continued farming until God called him home. He was instrumental in helping build the First Church of God in McCook in 1948, in which he attended and served in various positions on the board and wherever he was needed. In 1972, he was selected for the Culbertson Rural Fire Board where he served for 43 years until shortly after celebrating his 90th birthday. Dons overall love for life was evident throughout his passions including farming, collecting and working on his Case International tractors, and playing and spending time with his many grandchildren. His love for the Lord and lifetime dedication to the family and farm will be remembered by many for years to come. Don loved life, people, talking and sharing stories, and never met a stranger. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bruce and Clara Barger; brother, Robert Barger and wife, Joan; infant sister Velma and sisters, Doris and husband, Rollo Goodenberger, Vera and husband, Albert Wacker, Marjorie and husband, William Brickotch, June Spicklemier, Geraldene and husband Dwight Thorsen and; brothers-in-law, Donald Thorsen and Raymond Lundbery; and three grandchildren, Lance Barger, Dawn Kennedy, and Audrey Klein. He leaves to mourn his wife, Dorothy, of 73 years; sons, Jim Barger and wife, Cathy of Trenton and Jerry Barger and wife, Jani, of Culbertson; daughter, Sharen Kennedy of Miller; 10 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; sister, Marion Thorsen of Gordon; sisters-in-law, Elaine Witt of Hastings, Bethene and husband, Leo Lines, of Imperial and Bianca Lunbery of Axtell; brother-in-law, Harvey Spickelmier of Culbertson; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members and loved ones. Memorials will be given in his name to the West First Chapel. Memorial service will be Friday, December 22, 2017, 2:00 p.m., at West First Chapel, McCook, NE, with Johnny Walker officiating. Inurnment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery with full Military Honors. Herrmann Jones Funeral Chapel of McCook entrusted with arrangements.
