Devona Mae Houghtelling

Devona Mae (Carr) Houghtelling, 88, died Sunday (June 28, 2020) at CHI Health Nebraska Heart Hospital in Lincoln, NE. She was born on February 15, 1932 in Curtis, NE to Floyd and Norine (OConnell) Carr. Devona graduated High School in Palisade, NE. She married Eugene Gilbert Houghtelling on June 17, 1950; they were married for 55 years and to this union five children were born. They made their home in McCook, NE where Devona worked at DeGroffs Department Store for over thirty years. Devona was a faithful member of the McCook Memorial United Methodist Church. She was a member of the United Methodist Womens Circle and served as president from 2011-2012. Devona worshiped studying and teaching the Disciple Bible Lessons. In 2012, Devona was honored with the Laity award. She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Devona loved spending time gardening and cheering on all Husker athletics. Every year, Devona completed a March Madness bracket and enjoyed watching the basketball games. Devona was a member of the garden club and she volunteered at the Helping Hand Thrift shop in McCook, NE. She enjoyed being a caregiver and companion to many McCook residents. Proceeding Devona in death is her loving husband, Eugene Houghtelling, her parents, Floyd and Norine Carr; her infant daughter, Tira Houghtelling; son, Rory Houghtelling; two sisters, Creda and Sharon and one brother, Harlan; son-in-law, Bill Pew. Survivors include her brother, Gary and wife Judy Carr of Holdrege, NE; one son, Rady Houghtelling of Kalispell, MT; two daughters, Teresa and husband Ron Mihm of Brule, NE and Tamie Pew of Lincoln, NE; 13 grandchildren and many loved and cherished great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be at 11:00 a.m. (CST), Friday morning, July 17, 2020 at the Memorial United Methodist church in McCook, NE with Pastors Jeff Kelley and Alisa Parde officiating. Inurnment will follow services in the Memorial Park Cemetery in McCook, NE. Memorials may be given to the UMW Helping Hands Thrift store in McCook, NE.
