Delbert Eugene Carter

Delbert "Gene" Carter, 82, died October 7, 2020 at Community Hospital in McCook, Nebraska. He was born on February 7, 1938 in Cambridge, Nebraska to parents, Delbert Parker and Viola (Brown) Carter. Gene was the oldest of four boys. He attended school in Cambridge, graduating with the class of 1956. Gene married Joan Hess in 1956 and they moved to Oregon where he worked several mill jobs. The couple had five children: Cindy, Douglas, Timothy, Cherie, and Todd. Gene was united in marriage to Shirley Foster on July 2, 1987. They resided in Sweet Home, Oregon and then moved back to Nebraska shortly after Genes retirement in 2000 from the Willamette Plywood Mill after 39 years. They did some traveling and loved spending winters in Arizona before moving back to Nebraska. Two years after moving back to Nebraska, Gene and Shirley sold their motor home and continued their travels by bus, by cruise, and by flying. They also took two cruises together, one to Hawaii and the other through the Panama Canal; they took bus tours to Niagara Falls, Canada and Branson, Missouri and also flew to Florida a few times with friends. Gene was a member of the West First Chapel of McCook. Gene was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, Douglas; son, Timothy; and daughter, Cindy and her husband, Dusty Self. Gene and Shirley combined two families and considered each others children as their own. Survivors include Genes wife, Shirley; son, Todd (Anita) Carter of Las Vegas, Nevada; daughter, Cherie (Tim) Hansen of Redmond, Oregon; daughter-in-law, Deb Carter of Oregon; son, Rick (Theresa) Burton of Colby, Kansas; daughters: Deborah (James) Walker of Shreveport, Louisiana; Rhonda (Ken) Fries of Hershey, Nebraska; brothers: Merle (Dixie) Carter of North Bend, Oregon; Dennis (Yvonne) Carter of San Diego, California; Tom (Lisa) Carter of Beaverton, Oregon; Gene has five grandkids, seven great-grandkids and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
