Darrell "Twig" D. Mehaffie age 83, died on Wednesday June 23, 2010 at the Cambridge Memorial Hospital. He was born in Arapahoe, NE to Harry D and Ida B. (Mills) Mehaffie. Darrell graduated attended and graduated from Arapahoe High School in 1944. He served his country in World War II from 1945 to 47 serving in the Pacific Theatre in Okinawa. Darrell was united in marriage to Charla E. Case on Sept 11, 1954 in Arapahoe, NE. Twig was employed by the Twin Valley Rural Electric Company for 36 years. He was a lineman and an apparatus technician. After retirement Twig was the caretaker of the Fairview Cemetery in Cambridge for over 16 years. Darrell and Charla took on the chore of raising 2 grandsons: Danny and Josh. He was a member of the United Church of Christ First Congregational Church. He served on many boards for the church. He was also a delegate for the Pioneer Association Ministries Committee. He was a life member of the V.F.W., past District Commander, member of the Cambridge American Legion. Darrell was preceded in death by his parents: 2 sisters: Betsy Hester Best and Meta Mehaffie. He is survived by his wife Charla of Cambridge; 2 daughters: Willa Dea Mehaffie and fianc Tom Stubbs of Prosser, NE; Vanessa and husband Bill Harders of Wood River, NE; 4 grand children: Daniel and Joshua Mehaffie; Jeff and Emily Harders. Memorial services will be held on July 3, 2010, 10 30 AM at the UCC First Congregational Church in Cambridge with Bill Weaver officiating. Military Honors will be at graveside by the Cambridge American Legion Post. Inurnment will be in the Fairview Cemetery Cambridge, NE. Friends may sign the guest book on Thursday, July 1, 2010, or Friday, July 2, 2010, 9:00 AM to 5:00PM either day at the Mortuary. Memorial may be left in Darrells name at the Lockenour-Jones Mortuary to either the Cambridge Memorial Hospital or the First Congregational Church.
