Charles Edward Riley

Charles E. Riley, age 82, of McCook, NE, passed away at the Cambridge Memorial Hospital on Sunday, September 26, 2021. He was born in Gravette, Arkansas, to Gilbert and Vonnie (Duncan) Riley on February 11, 1939. Charles enlisted in the United States Navy on April 17, 1956. Charles served over 20 years in the Navy, being Honorably Discharged as a machinist mate and a drill instructor on May 17, 1976. He saw many ports over his 20 years in the Navy, from Virginia to Spain and the Mediterranean. Charles was united in marriage to Vivian Ernst on October 29, 1956, in McCook, Neb. Charles and Vivian moved from state to state during his enlistment and finally settled in McCook in 1976. Charles drove over the road after retiring from the Navy. As a trucker, he hauled grain for Allan Midcheck and Cornbelt Chemical. He later became an owner operator for John Verquer Trucking and Crete Carrier. He enjoyed watching old westerns on TV, fishing and hunting, and his animals, especially his dog, Peppy. Charles was a pretty good handyman. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gilbert and Vonnie; wife, Vivian and son-in-law, Bob Zlomke. Charles is survived by his daughter, Bonnie Zlomke of McCook; two sons, Bobby (Gerry) Riley of Orlando, FL and Chris (Jan) Riley of Indianola; three grandchildren; brother, Marvin (Shirley) Riley of Indianola; two sisters, Cleta (Gene) Baumfalk of McCook and Sharon (Neal) Meints of Manhattan, KS. Funeral services for Charles will be held at Herrmann-Jones Funeral Chapel at 10:30 AM on Friday, October 1, 2021. Visitation will be on Thursday, September 30, 2021, from 10:00 AM - 7:00 PM. The family will be present to greet friends from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery of McCook. Military Honors will be held graveside by the Naval Funeral Honors Detail.
