Barbara Jean Brown

Barbara Jean Brown was born on November 7, 1937 to Henry C. and Helen (Hill) Sitzman in Culbertson, Nebraska. She attended school in Culbertson where she graduated with the class of 1955. After high school, Barbara continued her education in Denver, Colorado at the Denver School of Business. On February 19, 1956, Barbara married her high school sweetheart, Dolyn D. Brown in Culbertson. Dolyn was in the United States Air Force. Barbara was a proud military wife and mother to their four children. Their twenty years in the Air Force would take them to Schilling Air Force Base in Salina, Kansas; Lincoln Air Force Base in Lincoln, Nebraska; KI Sawyer Air Force Base in Michigan; and Edwards Air Force Base in California. The family returned to Culbertson in 1974. Barbara was an avid reader. She enjoyed crossword and jigsaw puzzles. She enjoyed bird watching and loved working in and caring for her garden. Above all, Barbara was a passionate fan and follower of her children and grandchildren, attending countless Culbertson Bears and McCook Bison events. In addition to the local sports teams, Barb was a fan of Nebraska Husker sports. Barbara passed away Thursday evening, October 6, 2022 at Community Hospital in McCook, Nebraska. She was 84 years of age. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dolyn in 2016; her parents; brothers, Richard and Gary Sitzman; and sisters, Betty Schwenk and Marianne Cole. Survivors include her children: Janell Hartzer and husband, Yancey, of Culbertson; Dolyn D. Brown II and wife, Penny, of Valley, Nebraska; Brett Brown and wife, Kristin, of Dallas, Texas; and Mindy Felker and husband, Bryce, of Weeping Water, Nebraska; grandchildren: Dustin (Nichole) Hartzer, Corin (Wyatt) Hoagland; Dolyn Brown III, Allyx (Derek) Larimer, Nicole Hajek, Blake Brown, Madison (Alex) Martin, and Hunter Felker; great-grandchildren: Kinsleigh Hoagland, Riggs Hartzer, Archer Larimer, Haley Teppert, Jude Hajek, and Kayda Martin; brother, William Sitzman and wife, Pat; sister, Kathy Deuter; sisters-n-law, Peggy Sitzman and Joylyn Ross; as well as nieces, nephews, and friends. Cremation was chosen and a Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday evening, November 10, 2022 from 6-8pm at Herrmann-Jones Funeral Chapel in McCook. A private family inurnment will take place at a later date in the Culbertson Cemetery. Memorials are suggested the McCook Humane Society in Barbara's name.
