Arletta B. Matthews, age 89, of Indianola passed away Saturday, July 13, 2019 at El Dorado Manor in Trenton, NE. Arletta was born in Stratton, NE on August 8, 1929 to Floyd Forrest and Nellie Viola (Ovenden) League. She grew up in Stratton and was a survivor of the 1935 Republican River Flood. She attended Stratton schools graduating in 1946. Following graduation, she went to Normal Training school, acquiring her teaching certificate through McCook Junior College and taught school in Nebraska for two years. She was married to James Whiteman and to this union two daughters were born, Carla and Sharon. She later married Donald Matthews on December 20, 1952, and to this union two children were born, Donna and David. Arletta made her home raising her children. She was employed by Community Hospital of McCook for over 25 years as a Central Supply Technician. Arletta received the Soaring Award for excellent service. She had a deep love for Christmas and spent many days making Christmas ornaments for her loved ones. She also enjoyed embroidery, baking cookies, making candies and was notorious for her one-of-a-kind potato dumpling soup. She would read any book within reach but was especially enthralled by romance novels. She was the daughter of a preacher and a woman of faith. Her most precious memories entailed attending church while her father preached. In her later years she attended the Indianola Christian Church. She is preceded in death by her husbands, James Whiteman and Donald Matthews; two daughters, Carla Lang and Sharon Kay Matthews; three brothers, Floyd William League, Reuben Wayne League and Leon Rolland League; two sisters-in-law, Doris Ellen Kier and Betty Lou League; two sisters, Mildred Pollaro and Margaret Roustio; three brothers-in law, Joe Pollaro, Wayne Real and Tom Cook. Arletta is survived by her two children, Donna C. Matthews and David S. Matthews both of Indianola; son-in-law Doug Lang of Bismarck ND; six grandchildren, Pamela Stuck of Holbrook, Brandon Lang of Bismarck, ND, Jayme Lang of Topeka, KS, Darren Loh of Topeka, KS, Christopher Matthews of Gering, NE and Christine Lentz of Hardington, NE; six grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; six great-great grandchildren; three sisters, Lorraine Real of McCook, Ruth Cook of Colorado, Mary and husband, Dewaine Bauer of Kalispell, MT; one brother, Thomas and wife, Sandy League of Pasco, WA and a plethora of family and friends. Memorials may be given in her name.
