Am Johnston

A M Johnston died Friday, June 2, 2017 at McCook Community Hospital at the age of 88. A M Johnston was born November 3, 1928 in Sudan, Texas to Andrew Marion and Willie Lee (Hardcastle) Johnston. He graduated from Sudan High School. Following high school, he played guitar and sang with The Texas Melody Boys traveling to Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota. While playing In South Dakota, he met and married Patricia Carpenter. They were married November 5, 1949, in Huron, SD. A M began his career with the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation in 1950. In 1952, he entered the U.S. Army serving in Indiana and was later transferred to Germany. Following his discharge from the Army in 1953, he continued his career with the Bureau in Huron, later moving to Boulder City, NV and Grand Junction, CO, before returning to Huron in 1971. They moved to Billings, MT in 1979, returning to Huron when A M retired in 1981. After retiring, he contracted back with the Bureau working for short periods in Colorado, California, Nevada, Arizona, North Dakota and South Dakota. He was a faithful member of the Church of Christ for more than 50 years. He was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and a member of the M O Federal Credit Union in Huron for more than 60 years holding various positions on the board of directors and served as president in 1976 and 1977. He enjoyed playing his guitar and singing, playing pinochle and dominoes with family and friends, making homemade ice cream, bowling and golfing, which he began playing at age 70. Patricia preceded him in death March 15, 2002. A M moved to McCook, NE to be near his family in 2006, where he enjoyed watching his great-grandchildren grow. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Michael Allan, in 1982, as a result of a motorcycle accident; wife, Patricia; four brothers, Elmer, Elvin, Kenneth and Clifford; and four sisters, Rubie, LeRue, Arlene and Elva May. Survivors include two daughters, Glenda (Dale) Ellerton of McCook and DJ Johnston of Jefferson City, MT; two grandchildren, Terra (Brian) Michaelis of McCook, and Chad Ellerton of Boulder City, NV; four great- grandchildren, Kassidy, Mason, Lincoln and Kenzie Michaelis of McCook; sister-in-law, Lenora Olson of Huron, SD, and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial services are Wednesday, June 7, 2017, 2:00 pm at the Herrmann Jones Funeral Chapel in McCook with Rick Eldred officiating. Memorials may be given in his name to the Heritage Senior Center in McCook. Inurnment will be held at a later date in Huron, SD. Herrmann Jones Funeral Chapel of McCook is in charge of the arrangements. Memorial Service
