Alta Helen Swayne

McCOOK, Neb. -- Alta Helen Swayne, age 101, of McCook, passed away at Community Hospital in McCook on Feb. 5, 2016. She was born near Stockville in a sod house on Jan. 18, 1915, to George D. and Ida (Hinton) Halley. Helen attended country school in Frontier County. She worked on the family farm along with families, helping babysit or as a mid-wife for births before moving to Curtis, Nebraska. She worked at the Aggie Inn as a waitress. On May 25, 1943, she was united in marriage to Glen E. Swayne. The couple lived in Curtis until 1966. Helen worked at Fuller's Caf, the McCook Schools. She also worked at St. Catherine's Hospital in McCook. Helen enjoyed reading, crocheting, cooking and bingo. Helen moved to the Hillcrest Manor eight years ago when her health began to fail. Helen was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Glen in 1990; infant twins, Jack and Jaquetha; daughter, Rita Shaffer; great-grandson, Thomas King; sons-in-law, Myron Schmidt and Robert Lipska; brothers, Preston, Gerald, and Vernon; sisters, Eveline Durner, Fern Brush, and Maggie Brush; and three infant siblings. Helen's survivors are her daughters, Carolyn Schmidt of McCook and Lila Lipska of Bridgeport, Nebraska; grandchildren, Robert and wife, Karla Lipska of Palisade, Nebraska, Aaron Schmidt of McCook, Karen and Kevin King of Persia, Iowa; great-grandchildren, John King, Kyle King, Izabella Schmidt and Nathaniel Schmidt. Funeral services will be at Herrmann-Jones Funeral Chapel on Saturday, Feb. 13, 2016, at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Brad Brauer. Interment will be in the Arbor Cemetery in Stockville, Nebraska. Visitation will be Friday, Feb. 12, 2016, from 2 to 7 p.m. Memorials may be left in her name at Herrmann-Jones Funeral Chapel.
